A Day That Started With Possibilities

Some days are busy.

Some days are productive.

And then there are days that leave you thinking long after they are over.

Today was one of those days.

I spent the day in Oslo interviewing young people for a new company we are building. There is something exciting about being in the middle of a new chapter. New ideas are taking shape, opportunities are emerging, and the search for the right people becomes one of the most important parts of the journey.

What struck me most was not the business side of the day.

It was the people.

One after another, these young candidates walked into the room and impressed me. They were thoughtful, articulate, prepared, and confident. They spoke with purpose and carried themselves with a maturity that gave me genuine hope for the future.

We often hear stories about what younger generations are doing wrong.

Today reminded me of everything they are doing right.

The future is filled with talent.

And after today, I believe that more than ever.

A Rainy Afternoon at Grand Hotel

Between interviews, I spent some time at Grand Hotel in Oslo.

There is something timeless about that place.

Since opening its doors in 1874, the hotel has welcomed royalty, artists, Nobel Prize winners, and world leaders. Walking through its elegant halls feels like stepping into a small piece of Norwegian history.

Some buildings simply have character.

Grand Hotel is one of them.

The service is exceptional. Warm, attentive, and professional without ever feeling forced.

Outside, a light rain drifted through the city. Not enough to ruin anyone’s day, but enough to leave the streets shining beneath the city lights. There is something beautiful about Oslo in the rain. The city slows down just enough to make you notice things you would otherwise miss.

The Long Drive Home

Eventually, the workday came to an end.
I climbed into the car and started the journey home.
Then came the rush hour traffic.
Twenty extra minutes on the road is hardly a tragedy, but it was enough time for my thoughts to wander.

And as often happens, they drifted toward dinner.

Surely I cannot be the only person who spends an unreasonable amount of time thinking about what to make for dinner.

It is one of life’s daily mysteries.
No matter how successful or productive the day has been, eventually the question arrives.
What are we eating tonight?

Comfort Food at Its Best

Tonight’s answer turned out to be something I had not made in a very long time.
Meatballs in brown gravy with butter fried broccoli.

Real comfort food.
The kind of meal that instantly feels familiar.
The kind of meal that reminds you that simple food is often the very best food.

As I stood in the kitchen, stirring the gravy and frying the broccoli in butter, I found myself smiling. It had been far too long since I had made this meal.

And honestly?

It tasted even better than I remembered.

The broccoli was perfectly cooked with just enough texture left, and the rich brown gravy brought everything together.

Nothing fancy.
Nothing complicated.
Just good food made with care.

Why I Love Cooking

I have always loved spending time in the kitchen.
For me, cooking has never been just about food.

It is therapy.

After a day filled with conversations, decisions, meetings, and travel, there is something calming about focusing on a single task.

Chop.
Stir.
Taste.
Repeat.

The world becomes quieter for a little while.
And perhaps that is why I enjoy it so much.
In a busy world, cooking forces us to slow down.

A Little Chocolate Never Hurts

Of course, there was one more important ingredient to the day.

Chocolate.

Just a small piece.
But enough to satisfy the sweet tooth.
I firmly believe life is about balance.

A healthy walk.

A homemade dinner.

A little chocolate.

That seems perfectly reasonable to me.

From City Life to Coastal Calm

Before dinner, I managed to squeeze in a walk.
After hours spent sitting in meetings and driving, it felt wonderful to move again.
As I walked, I found myself reflecting on how fortunate I am to live where I do.
Only a few hours earlier, I had been surrounded by the energy of Oslo.

Traffic.
Meetings.
People.
Movement.

Now I was home near the coast.

The air felt fresher.
The pace felt slower.
Everything felt calmer.
Living by the sea gives me a sense of balance that I never want to take for granted.
Oslo inspires ambition.
The coast restores peace.

And somehow, the contrast between the two makes me appreciate both even more.

The Nap That Changed the Evening

After dinner, I sat down on the sofa.

Just for a moment.
At least that was the plan.
I told myself I would simply rest my eyes for a few minutes.

Nothing more.

The next thing I knew, I woke up and looked at the clock.
Four hours had passed.
Four hours. WHAT!!
I genuinely could not believe it.

I sat there staring at the time, wondering what had happened.
Every plan I had for the evening had disappeared.

At first, I laughed.
Then I wondered whether my body had desperately needed the rest.
And then came the next question.
Will I sleep tonight? ..That remains to be seen.

But perhaps my body knew exactly what it was doing.

Sometimes rest arrives before we realise we need it.

As Winston Churchill once said:

“Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts.”

Fun Fact

Researchers have found that even a short nap can improve memory, creativity, and problem solving skills. Although I am fairly certain they were not talking about a four hour sofa marathon.

Motto from Nordè

The most meaningful days are rarely the ones we plan perfectly. They are the days filled with inspiring people, simple pleasures, unexpected pauses, and moments that remind us to appreciate the life we are living.
